Your news hit me and my wall came tumbling down,
You lay there on the gurney,
Calm and serene in chaos,
Tubes and wires beeps echo through the passageways,
IV hooked to life support,
You lost to consciousness through all this effort,
Holding your hand tightly a tear slips down,
Fear churning inside,
Questions and answers swirl around the atmosphere,
Doctors and nurses in and out,
Not one face remembered,
Tragic memories of long ago,
Losing family members as they lay lost between the forest of tubes,
And the family waiting by their sides,
Firm grasp, holding to never let go,
Forcing strength through our connection,
Sleeping deeply from exhaustion in ICU chair,
Watching day by day,
Surgery after surgery,
Always by your side,
Praying to God,
Tears streaming down my face as I plead,
On the other side six days later,
Your eyes open to the new existence,
Here changed forever,
My love, never in my eye,
Always the one I always knew,
No surgery will ever take your self from the mirror in my heart.
