(Inspired by Washington Irving’s Headless Horseman, one of my favorite American authors.)
In the dark hallow he rests,
In and out goes his breath,
There is the beat,
Chu, chump, chu, chump,
The hooves pound the earth,
His heart beats,
Waiting to see,
If tonight is his fate,
To fade away into the dark sky,
Slowly as the haze of morning washes away,
The dread, as man waits in shallow ditch,
Clutching to his chest,
Locket of gold and love,
Filled with the protective spirt,
Of his long past love,
For hunting him above,
The horseman rides,
Searching his prey,
Chu, chump, chu, chump,
His horse clamps away,
Off across wooden bridge,
Deep into forbidden ground,
That no man bears to go,
For it is Death’s realm,
A place no man returns from,
There he lives,
Forever hunting,
Those on his lengthy list,
Almost an infinity of souls to collect,
For his hunger is never satisfied,
Cursed to toil to the end of time,
As mans breath continues,
In and out,
Dawn shines all about,
He knows this day, he was saved,
To run and hide from Death for another day.
